Veterans Day Celebration At East End
Veterans Day was a special day at East End Elementary.  Thanks to the leadership of Ann Cleveland, Leah Gannon, and Laura Moore special highlights of veterans who have a connection to the East End Elementary family were highlighted on this day set aside to our our nation's veterans.  Mrs. Cleveland and Mrs. Gannon organized a CD recording of interviews conducted with veterans who are relatives of East End faculty and students.   Levi Segee interviewed his grandfather and namesake, Levi Thompson who served in the US Navy during WWII.  Talmadge Day interviewed . sis grandfather and namesake, Amy McJunkin interviewed her father, Benny Roper who served in the Army during the Vietnam years.   Sarah Campbell interviewed Jessica Max's husband, Jeremy Max, who currently serves in the Army and has completed two tours of service in Iraq.  Juli Sanders interviewed her father, Gary Sanders, who served in the Navy in Vietnam.

Additional veterans with connections were also highlighted in this CD.   Many tears were shed and humbling moments realized as we all watched these veterans talk of their time of service in our Armed Forces.   Three veterans joined Mrs. Day and students for the morning Pledge of Allegiance.  Mr. Michael McJunkin, Mr. Benny Roper, and Mr. Talmadge Hamlin led the students in the Pledge of Allegiance.  These veterans and their spouses were invited to a breakfast in honor of our veterans.   They also visited classrooms.

In addition, the Wall of Honor that was begun for Veterans Day 2008 was again displayed with additional names being added for veterans who served our country and have a connection to East End Elementary.   This Wall of Honor is tribute and a wonderful lesson for our East End students.

The CD and activities for this year's Veterans Day were in memory of Captain Kimberly Hampton, Easley native, who served our country bravely in Iraq and was killed when the helicopter that she was piloting was attacked by enemy fire.  To see the video shared with our Veterans, please click on the link below.

Look At The Great Things Happening In First Grade!
Our first grade teachers plan instruction to meet the needs of our students. Visitors to our classrooms would see large group, small group, and individual instruction throughout the day.  Guided reading groups are a vital part of our instructional program.   This is the time that the teacher meets with a small group of students to work with them in their reading achievement.   Small groups are also a regular part of the math instruction.

There is a Chinese proverb that says "Give me a fish and I'll eat for a day.  Teach me to fish and I'll eat for a lifetime."   There is also the saying,  "Tell me, I'll forget.  Show me, I'll remember.  Involve me, I'll understand."   Our first grade teachers are busy teaching and involving our learners so that they will understand for a lifetime.   Our first graders are happy,  busy and they are learning each and every day.  We're sharing some pictures of the things happening in our first grade classes.

Red Ribbon Week Culminates With Hat Day
Red Ribbon Week culminates with Hat Day to signify "Put a Cap on Drugs."   The week was filled with special days to remind our students of the importance of choosing a drug-free lifestyle.  We had "Team Up Against Drugs Day" when the students wore their favorite team shirts or team colors. There was "Sock It To Drugs Day" when the students wore crazy socks.  We also had "Wear Red Day" in honor of Red Ribbon Week. There was also 'Turn Your Back On Drugs" when the students wore their shirts or clothing backwards to signify turning their backs on drugs.  The PTO sponsored a prize drawing each day where students received Red Ribbon Themed items for winning in the drawing. These included "glow in the dark" yo-yos, water bottles, ID necklaces, frisbees, and message bracelets all with Red Ribbon Week messages.  In addition, all students received a lollipop with "Say Boo To Drugs" on Friday.  It was a great week. Thanks, Mr. Byrd, for being the best sport!  The students had a great time!  Thanks also, PTO!

East End Named Promise Place by America's Promise Alliance
We are thrilled to share the great news that East End Elementary has been designated as a PROMI5E PLACE by America's Promise Alliance.   In order to be designated as a PROMI5E PLACE, the recipient organization must demonstrate the five following promises:
  • caring adults
  • safe places
  • healthy start
  • effective education
  • opportunities to help others
America's Promise Alliance began in 1997 as a result of the Presidents' Summit for America's Future.  Presidents Clinton, Bush, Carter and Ford with Nancy Reagan representing President Ronald Reagan, issued a challenge to our nation to make children and youth a priority.

This Summit was attended by governors, mayors, community delegations, and prominent business leaders from across the nation.  It was sponsored by the Points of Light Foundation, the Corporation for National and Community Service and United Way of America.  These groups became the Founding Partners of America's Promise Alliance. Retired General Colin Powell was the Founding Chairman of America's Promise Alliance.  Alma Powell is  currently the Chair of the Alliance.

At the Summit, a declaration was issued by the living Presidents.   Read the link for more information about the original summit.

In our PROMI5E PLACE designation, the s in the word promise is replaced by a 5 to designate the 5 promises that each PROMI5E PLACE offers for the children and youth of our nation.

In our letter from America's Promise Alliance it states, "America's Promise Alliance is pleased to inform you that East End Elementary School has been designated a Promise Place.  Congratulations on this achievement and thank you for all you do to ensure that the youth of your community receive the Five Promises!

By providing access to caring adults, safe places, a healthy start, an effective education and opportunities to help others, you are helping to prepare the young people you serve for success in school and life.  Our research shows that young people who receive four of the Five Promises are far more likely to be successful, to get A's, to avoid violence, and volunteer.   You are directly contributing to those outcomes by leveling the playing field for youth across racial and economic lines."

We are thrilled and honored to be a PROMI5E PLACE.

Family-Friendly Standards for 5K - 5th Grade

The South Carolina Education Oversight Committee (EOC) has published Family-Friendly Standards to assist all SC families with standards at each grade level. The EOC states in the publications, “A good educational system provides many tools that help children learn. Academic standards are useful in making sure that teachers know what is to be taught, that children know what is to be learned and that parents and the public can determine how well the concepts are being learned.”

These Parent-Friendly standards are excellent resources for families to use in this process. Noted below are the links to the Family-Friendly Standards from the EOC for 5K—5th grade in both English and Spanish.

It is our hope that these will prove to be good resource tools for you this year. The EOC Web site states, “Each guide shares important information about the South Carolina Academic Standards. These standards outline state requirements for your child’s learning program and what students across the state should be able to do in certain subjects
.”

The Web site address for accessing this information is

http://eoc.sc.gov/informationforfamilies/FamilyFriendlyStandards.htm

Our goal remains that each student will develop to his or her full potential as we work to help each child be successful in meeting MAP (Measures of Academic Progress) growth targets as well as helping each student in grades 3-5, at a minimum, meet grade level standards on PASS (Palmetto Assessment of State Standards.)
   '
In a process that we refer to as “triangulation of data”, which is comparing at least 3 different sets of data, we are able to diagnose areas of need and work with each child at his or level to assist them in making gains.   For example, in 5K, we look at the pre-test for kindergarten, 5K report card and MAP tests for triangulation. We continue this type process at each grade level to match data and make instructional decisions for each and every student.

SDPC Guidelines for Early Childhood Grades

Progress Reports Distributed For Students in Grades 2-5
We have just passed the midpoint of the first nine weeks. Progress reports were distributed to parents to indicate the achievement of our students in grades 2-5. Time remains for students to have an opportunity to improve the grades at the interim point.   Parents are encouraged to contact your child’s teacher if you have any questions.   In like manner, teachers will be contacting parents if they have the need for a conference at this point. As always, it is our goal for students to reach their full potential.   With the support and cooperation of the home, this is possible.

Attendance... Key To Success ... Attendance Reminders

One of the most important things you, as a parent, can do is make sure your child attends school regularly. While some absences for illness are unavoidable, nothing can replace the educational, cultural and social contacts that students experience through regular participation in class. Students with good attendance achieve more than students who are often absent. Attendance is also a major criterion in promoting a student. According to state law, students must attend a minimum of 180 days of school a year. Of these 180 days, students cannot miss more than 10 days including excused and unexcused absences. If a school is closed due to inclement weather, the school year may be extended to allow students to make up the missed days.
Reasons for excused absences are:

Illness
Death in the immediate family
Emergency situations
Recognized religious holidays

Things To Do If Your Child Is Ever Absent

Students/Parents must provide a written excuse (within 3 days of an absence, or if the student has several continuous absences – within 3 days after the student’s return to school) from a parent, guardian or health practitioner for ALL absences other than those approved by the principal for a school-sponsored activity.

A valid excuse must:

be dated,

list the student’s full name,

contain the date(s) of the absence(s),

list the reason for the absence(s),

list a telephone number of the parent (if needed for verification)

Tardies

Parents should have students at school on time each day. Late students miss important instruction and create a disruption in the class when arriving late. Late arrival (tardiness) results in interruptions to the learning process – not only for the tardy student but for the other students in the class as well. Constant tardiness may be referred to the Director of Student Services for further action.

Important Information from District Nursing Coordinator
We are going to share some information from Angela Watson, Coordinator of Nursing with the School District of Pickens County.
”The School District of Pickens County is taking steps to reduce the spread of flu in our schools. We want to keep schools open and functioning in a normal manner during this flu season. To do this, we need everyone’s help with the following :
Teach washing hands often with soap and water or an alcohol-based hand rub.
Teach family members not to share personal items like drinks, food, or unwashed utensils.
Teach covering coughs and sneezes with tissues. Also teach covering coughs or sneezes using the elbow, arm or sleeve instead of the hand when a tissue is unavailable.
Know the signs and symptoms of the flu—fever of 100° or greater, cough, sore throat, a runny or stuffy nose, body aches, headache, and feeling very tired. Some people may also have vomiting or diarrhea.
Stay home when you are sick for at least 24 hours after you no longer have fever or do not have signs of fever without using fever reducing medications. Staying home will reduce the numbers of people who may become infected.
Do not send sick children to school. Students who are determined to be sick while at school will be sent home.”
This will help protect everyone’s health. Thanks for your cooperation

Handwashing Is The Most Effective Way To Prevent Germs

As we approach the flu season and winter months we have initiated a daily reminder to our students to use good hygiene and sanitation habits to protect them at school and everywhere they are during the day. It is extremely important that children wash their hands frequently and that they keep open wounds covered at all times to prevent the spread of any type germs.
In researching what would be the best practice to eliminate germs, we have found that hand washing is the single most important prevention mechanism in prevention of flu, H1N1, MRSA or any contagious bug or germ. We have been and will continue to encourage our students to wash their hands after each trip to the restroom, before eating snack, before lunch, and after sneezing or touching any sore or break in the skin. Your help in encouraging these good hygiene and healthy habits at home will also be a great help.

Our custodial staff sanitizes our facility on a daily basis. We take advantage of every way to keep our building as clean as possible. Most germs are passed from human to human. In consultation with local health officials and DHEC, we have learned that good hygiene among our students and people in our facility is the best practice to prevent disease. Please assist us by encouraging your child to wash his or her hands frequently and to keep all sores and wounds covered at all times. Your help in keeping our students healthy is greatly appreciated .   Our goal is to promote healthy habits with our students.

Information About Pre-Arranged Absences
Parents are reminded that requests for pre-arranged absences should be sent to the school in writing or via e-mail at least two weeks in advance so that we will have time to respond if the request is approved. Without a pre-arranged request, absences for out-of-town trips will automatically be considered an unexcused absences. Please reference the materials in the School District of Pickens County’s Back-To-School handbook as well as the Back-To-School East End Handbook for important information concerning pre-arranged absences.

As the Board Policy and State Attendance regulations note, students are required to be in attendance at least 170 of the 180 days of school in order to be considered for promotion.   Excused and unexcused absences both count in the total for absences. Pay careful attention to the attendance policy information. Students who miss more than 10 days are automatically referred to the Attendance Appeals Committee for promotion and retention decisions. Questions? Please feel free to call Darian Byrd, assistant principal, who handles our attendance records that are required by district policy and state regulations

What Is An East End Positive Bulldog Referral?

Congratulations to Hazel and other East End students who have received a Positive Bulldog Referral this year.   Positive Bulldog Referrals are given to students who exhibit great character, super citizenship or excellence in academics.  They are our East End  Elementary School mission statement in action.  Our mission statement is "Excelling in Academics, Encouragaging Character, Embracing the Community, and S eeking Success for All Students."  This is another way we are encouraging students to do their very best and become the very best that they can be.  We have lots of East End Positive Bulldog Referrals to date this year and know we will have lots more as we have great students doing great things all the time.  Super job, students!

What Is An East End Elementary Fishbowl?
What is a fishbowl at East End Elementary?  A fishbowl is a recognition that is given to a student by an East End adult, most often an East End teacher.   This practice dates back to the time when Mr. Don Batson was principal at East End. Students who received a fishbowl would have their  names written on a slip of paper and placed in a large fishbowl in the office.  Once a week, a name would be drawn from the fishbowl and the student would receive a special treat for being the name selected.

This practice of giving fishbowls has continued throughout out the years.   Students receive fishbowls for many different positive traits, accomplishments, or behaviors.  Fishbowls can be given for great participation in a related arts class, for improving on a spelling test, for being kind to a friend, for learning a new concept of skill, and for many other things.  Student names are turned into the office and placed into grade level "fishbowls."   Because we have so many great things happening at East End and because we don't want anyone who is recognized for accomplishments to miss being recognized, we honor many students each week.    In the years prior to the current administration, the names were only eligible for the week that they were submitted by the adult.   We want all our children to receive affirmation for their work and made the decision to change this to acknowledge all fishbowl recipients by keeping their names in the fishbowl so that they would be recognized at some point rather than starting with empty fishbowls each week.

The primary recognition is for the child to have his or her name called over the intercom with the morning announcements and coming to the main lobby area after the announcements and receiving a treat, most often a special sticker, from the administration.   We celebrate fishbowls and all fishbowl recipients.  In keeping with our East End Elementary School mission statement of "Excelling in Academics, Encouraging Character, Embracing the Community, and Seeking success for all students", we honor and rejoice in the fishbowl accomplishments.

So, at East End, our fishbowls have no fishes, but have many, many student names acknowledging their excellent academics, character, courage, citizenship, and success.

Lost And Found
Lost and found items are located on the school stage throughout the year.  It is very helpful to the East End faculty when items of clothing have a child's first and last name.  This makes for an easy return to the child at school.  If an owner cannot be located, the item is placed in our Lost and Found.   If items remain for more than a month, they are donated to local charities.   Please check the Lost and Found if an item is missing.  It is most helpful if items have a child's name on them.  Your help with this is greatly appreciated.

New Vounteers To Have SLED Checks
The School District of Pickens County is requiring a SLED (South Carolina Law Enforcement Division) background check for all volunteers who will be supervising students or participating in events such as field trips.  A letter was released from district leadership concerning the requirements of a background check requirement for new volunteers.  Those who were active volunteers in 2008 - 2009 and have a background check noted in the Keep'NTrack system will not be required to complete a background check.   Mr. Byrd serves as our volunteer coordinator at East End.  He will be contacting trained volunteers who will need to participate in the SLED check.  The requirement of the SLED check by the district also results in a $25.00 per person cost to cover the SLED check. Since we have completed 5 sessions of volunteer training for new volunteers this year prior to the release of the letter from the district, Mr. Byrd will contact individuals already trained to make them aware of the additional cost for the background check. Those who will need to pay for the $25.00 background check will be contacted by Mr. Byrd over the next two weeks.   If you have any questions, please feel free to call the school.  We'll be glad to assist in any way.

East End Bulldog Pup Mascots Are Batson and B B

Many names were submitted for consideration in naming our East End bulldog pups.   A committee was formed to select the names for the bullpups from the 200+ names submitted. Lots of great ideas and names were shared. After discussion and consideration, the committee decided to choose names that were a part of East End’s history that dated back to our East End Elementary bulldog heritage. The names chosen were “Batson” and   “B B” in honor of the principals who served East End Elementary. Mr. B B McKelvey was principal of East End Elementary from 1959—1970. Mr. McKelvey then continued his career at the district office until his retirement. Mr. Don Batson became principal of East End in the summer of 1970 and he continued to serve until his retirement in 1992. Both Mr. McKelvey and Mr. Batson were principals during the time of the East End bulldogs and the East End bulldog football teams, sponsored by the local recreation department. In addition, by choosing the name B B, this would also be honoring Mrs. Becky Hyatt and Mrs. Sandra Bandy, also former East End principals. So, “Batson” and “B B” became the name of the East End bulldog pup mascots. Congratulations to Hazel Hill, third grader in Ms. Alexander’s class, for wining the contest to name the bullpups. She wins a $100.00 supply voucher for Ms. Alexander and the first framed print of Batson and BB for her to keep as a reward for winning.

Grandparents' Night Was A Huge Success
Grandparents' Night was a huge success!  Thanks to the help of many PTO volunteers, our Grandparents' Night was one of the best ever. We had hundreds of grandparents and guests join us for the evening. We were also able to assist additional parents and guardians with Web site registration.   In addition, a large number of volunteers were trained during the two training sessions held in conjunction with Grandparents’ Night. Thanks to our PTO for all their help. Their help made this evening possible.  The partnership between home and school is vital to a school's success.  Grandparents are an important part of this bond between the home and school. Thanks to all grandparents who attended.  A great time was had by all!  Here are some pictures of our evening's events.

This is such a wonderful opportunity for our students.

Award Winning Students at East End Elementary
East End Elementary students are off to a wonderful year with many special recognitions. Our students are recognized each week for Fish Bowls, which is a tradition that dates back to Mr. Don Batson's tenure as principal at East End.  Student names are submitted by faculty members for great behavior, improved behavior, super citizenship, excellent grades, improved grades and many other special accomplishments that they note in the student.  The student's name is placed in the fish bowl for our weekly drawings.  Each student whose name is drawn from the weekly drawings has his or her name called over the intercom with the morning announcements noting the recognition and also receives a special sticker noting his or her accomplishment.

In addition, we have a weekly Principal's Good Book publication. Student names are sent to Mrs. Day by the teachers for students achieving an accomplishment that notes they should be published in the weekly Principal's Good Book. The students' names on the weekly Principal's Good Book are called over the intercom with the Friday morning announcements, have their name and picture published on the Principal's Good Book listing for the week, and receive a special sticker noting their accomplishment for the week.   The Principal's Good Book is located in our school lobby as well as published on our school Web site.

A new recognition initiated this year is Positive Bulldog Recognition for students demonstrating great citizenship and behavior.  Their names are submitted by Mrs. Day. Each student receives a certificate for Positive Bulldog Recognition noting the reason that the student's name was submitted.  The certificate is signed by Mrs. Day and the students are recognized in the minoring announcements.  We have had many Positive Bulldog Recognitions this year.  East End students are doing a great job with citizenship and behavior.

A new recognition that begins this year is the Best Bulldogs. Each teacher will be asked to select one student per homeroom who has exhibited the characteristics of being the "Best Bulldog" in the classroom. These students will be treated to a special lunch in their honor as well as receive a free treats noting this special recognition.

We are making extra efforts to recognize and encourage the best in all of our students.   East End students are the best and we want to be sure that they know we acknowledge this and encourage them to be the very best that they can be as a young person.

Free and Reduced Lunch Applications

East End Elementary Encourages Citizenship, Character, and Academics
East End Elementary's Mission is:
E xcelling in Academics
E ncouraging Character
E mbracing the Community
S eeking Success for all Students

In coordination with this mission, we recognize our students for academics, character, and citizenship through our Fish Bowls and our Principal's Good Book.  Fish Bowls is a recognition that began under Mr. Don Batson's administration when student names were placed in a large fish bowl for good behavior and or citizenship.  Names were drawn and recognized each week with special treats. We have enhanced this recognition by being sure that some time dung the school year that all students who are nominated with a fish bowl by their teachers are acknowledged on the morning announcements as well as receive a sticker for this special recognition.   Our Principal's Good Book is a list of students who are nominated by their teacher each week for improved citizenship or academics or excellence in academics or citizenship.  These students' names are published on the Principal's Good Book  and placed on our school's Web site.  In addition, their picture is taken and they receive a Principal's Good Book sticker noting their accomplishment for being published for the week's Principal's Good Book.

Continuing with this heritage of honoring our students, we have initiated the Positive Bulldog Referral.  Students are referred to the office for a Positive Bulldog Referral for great citizenship and or behavior in the classroom.   The students receive a certificate for this referral as well as a sticker.  We already have a number of students honored for this special recognition.

In addition, we will begin a new program this year called  Best Bulldogs.  Each homeroom teacher will nominate one student each month to be honored as the Best Bulldog from the homeroom.  This Best Bulldog will be treated to a special lunch, receive a certificate for being named the Best Bulldog, and receive a Best Bulldog sticker.

We want our students to know that citizenship, character, and academics are all important and relate to our school's mission.   Please be looking on our Web site for more Fish Bowls, Principal's Good Book, Positive Bulldog Referrals, and Best Bulldogs.  East End Elementary students are the best!
